  • This page will cover the basics of furniture refinishing. To restore the finish click here.

You'll need a furniture stripper suitable for the finish you're removing. The liquid type is cheaper but the thick stuff adheres better. Don't get the type in a spray can, it costs too much.

You'll also need a 1" putty knife, a razor scraper, newspaper, rags, an old paint brush and gloves.

Use the stripper in a well-ventilated area and away from pilot lights, flames, etc.

Start with about a 1' X 1' section and brush on the stripper. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so and when it bubbles scrape off with the putty knife. After each swipe clean the knife on the newspaper. The stripper will burn your skin so try not to splash it or touch it with your bare hands. (If you do get some on you or you feel your skin burning rinse with cool water right away). Repeat the process a section at a time until the furniture is completely stripped of finish. You may have to repeat the application on some or all the sections especially if there are multiple layers of finish or paint.

When you're done with that step wipe the surface with paint thinner or lacquer thinner.

After the wood is completely dry sand with #80 sandpaper. Rub out any stains and bad spots. Re-sand with #100 sandpaper until smooth. Then finally re-sand with #220 sandpaper. After you're done sanding the bare wood, take some #0000 sandpaper and go over the furniture one more time. Wipe the entire surface with paint thinner and let it dry. Now you're ready for stain.

After the stain dries it's time for a finish. You have a variety of choices such as brush on or spray on and poly-urethane or shellac. My preference is spray on poly-urethane. Spray in a sweeping motion with the grain (and lightly). Let it dry. Rub with #0000 steel wool. Wipe with a dry soft cloth. Spray again. 3-4 coats is usually enough. Let it dry between applications.

After the finish has dried for 24 hours you're ready for the last step. Rub paste wax for wood on the entire piece and buff.
